Before and After

  • Before: The original area was a mix of broken paving slabs, weeds, and overgrown shrubs. An old, unstable fence did little to define the space, making it look cluttered and uninviting. The lack of proper parking was impractical and detracted from the property’s appearance.
  • After: The finished project is a masterclass in modern design. A brand new, robust brick wall with elegant pillars frames a stunning charcoal block paved driveway. The space is now clean, expansive, and provides ample, secure parking. The transformation has not only improved the functionality of the space but has also dramatically enhanced the home’s overall aesthetic.

How the Magic Happened

This was a comprehensive project that involved clearing the old and building the new to a high standard.

  1. Site Clearance & Excavation: The first job was to completely clear the site. We removed all the old paving slabs, overgrown vegetation, and the dilapidated fence. The entire area was then excavated to the correct depth to create a blank canvas for a solid and long-lasting new installation.
  2. Building the New Boundary Wall: With the ground prepared, we constructed the new boundary wall. Built from classic red brick to complement the house, the wall features integrated pillars topped with stone copings for a premium finish. This new structure provides privacy and a clear, attractive boundary for the property.
  3. Laying the Foundations: A solid driveway needs a solid base. We laid and compacted a full MOT Type 1 sub-base, followed by a layer of sand screed. This creates a stable and permeable foundation, essential for preventing sinking and ensuring the longevity of the block paving.
  4. Block Paving Installation: The main driveway was laid with high-quality charcoal block paving in a classic herringbone pattern. We incorporated a lighter-coloured pinstripe border to add definition and visual interest. An ACO drainage channel was also installed to ensure efficient water run-off, protecting the home and the new driveway.
  5. Finishing Touches: Finally, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints of the block paving before the whole area was compacted to lock the blocks securely in place. The result is a smooth, durable, and beautifully finished surface.

Conclusion

This project in Nelson is a prime example of how a well-designed driveway and wall can completely transform a property. By replacing an unusable front garden with a high-quality block paved driveway and a handsome brick wall, we have created a practical, low-maintenance, and incredibly smart entrance that the homeowners can be proud of.
