This was no ordinary driveway project, covering a total of 370m², it combined 220m² of block paving and 150m² of tarmac surfacing in a complex, multi-level layout. While several companies passed on the opportunity due to its scale, our team welcomed the challenge. The result? A truly impressive transformation that blends durability, design, and detail.

Before and After
- Before: The original driveway was cracked, uneven, and limited in space, paired with a narrow gravel lane and an unstable surface that had become difficult to maintain. Several contractors had turned down the job due to its size and complexity.
- After: Transformed into a stunning 370m² driveway featuring a 45° herringbone block paving design and a fully resurfaced private lane in smooth tarmac. Clean borders, solid foundations, and a seamless finish have completely modernised the property’s entrance and usability.
Project Steps
- Driveway Removal & Excavation
- We started by clearing the entire existing driveway, which had severely deteriorated over time. The surface was excavated down 10–12 inches to allow for a robust and stable base that would support the new materials.
- Membrane & Base Construction
- A heavy-duty geotextile membrane was installed to separate the subsoil and prevent movement. This was followed by a deep layer of compacted hardcore, creating a solid foundation to support both the tarmac and paving.
- Laying the Block Paving
- Close to the house, we installed a stunning 45° herringbone pattern using charcoal paving blocks. A light grey border was added to define the edges and elevate the finish, bringing both elegance and strength to the design.
- Private Road Tarmac Surfacing
- The long approach road was surfaced with 10mm tarmac, chosen for its durability and excellent drainage performance. We carried the block paving borders down the length of the lane, tying the entire installation together with a consistent visual style.
- Rear Access Improvements
- The back of the property wasn’t overlooked, we resurfaced this section with fresh tarmac too, completing a full wraparound finish that’s functional and great to look at.
