Project Overview
Meadow Drives recently completed this block paved driveway installation for a homeowner in Burnley. The project transformed an ageing, uneven driveway and overgrown front garden into a spacious, practical and smart new parking area.
The finished driveway uses charcoal block paving laid in a traditional herringbone pattern, complemented by contrasting light-grey borders and decorative edging. The new layout makes much better use of the available space while creating a clean, contemporary entrance to the property.

Before and After
Before
The existing frontage consisted of an older tarmac driveway alongside a substantial planted garden area. The driveway surface had become worn and uneven in places, while the existing layout limited the amount of usable parking space.
Mature shrubs and planting also occupied a large proportion of the front garden, leaving an opportunity to create a much more practical driveway while retaining selected landscaped areas around the property.
After
The frontage has been completely transformed with a large charcoal block paved driveway extending across the available space.
Contrasting light-grey paving has been used around the perimeter and within the curved detailing beside the house, creating a crisp, defined finish. The herringbone paving pattern gives the driveway a traditional appearance while providing a strong and durable surface suitable for everyday vehicle use.
Preparing the Driveway
The first stage involved clearing the existing driveway and removing the necessary sections of the front garden to create space for the enlarged parking area.
The ground was excavated to the required depth before a suitable sub-base was installed, levelled and thoroughly compacted. Good groundwork is essential for a block paved driveway, helping to provide long-term strength and reduce the risk of movement or settlement.
Careful attention was also given to the levels around the property, existing entrance and pavement to ensure the new driveway connected neatly with the surrounding areas.
Creating the New Layout
One of the main aims of the project was to maximise the usable driveway space while maintaining an attractive shape around the house and remaining garden.
The previous planted areas were carefully reduced and the new driveway was extended across the frontage, providing considerably more room for parking and manoeuvring vehicles.
Curved detailing was incorporated alongside the property and around the existing landscaped area, softening the overall appearance and helping the driveway blend naturally with the shape of the garden.
Contrasting Block Paved Borders
Light-grey block paving was installed around the perimeter of the driveway to contrast with the darker main paving.
The border follows the shape of the driveway and continues around the curved sections beside the house, producing a neat and well-defined edge.
Additional darker detailing within the border creates a smart feature that gives the finished installation a distinctive, high-quality appearance.
Installing the Block Paving
The main driveway was finished using charcoal block paving laid in a herringbone pattern.
Herringbone is a popular choice for driveways because the interlocking layout creates a strong surface capable of withstanding regular vehicle traffic.
Once laid, the paving was carefully cut around the edges and detailing to achieve a clean finish. The completed driveway combines durability with a smart, uniform appearance that complements both the brickwork and rendered sections of the property.
The Finished Driveway
The completed driveway has dramatically changed the appearance and practicality of the front of the property.
What was previously a relatively narrow driveway surrounded by substantial planting is now a generous block paved area offering significantly more usable parking space.
The charcoal paving, contrasting light-grey borders and curved detailing work together to create a clean and coordinated finish. Retaining sections of the original garden also helps soften the driveway and maintains some greenery around the property.
Conclusion
This block paved driveway project in Burnley demonstrates how an existing frontage can be redesigned to provide considerably more usable space without sacrificing appearance.
From excavation and groundwork through to the carefully formed borders, curved detailing and herringbone paving, every stage was completed with attention to detail. The finished result is a strong, low-maintenance and attractive driveway that improves access, increases parking space and gives the property a much smarter entrance.
