Project Overview
This project involved the full transformation of a dated and worn-out driveway and perimeter pathways at a residential property in Accrington. The original surface consisted of old concrete flags that had become heavily weathered, cracked, and overrun with weeds, leaving the area looking tired and uneven. The narrow side paths around the house were also cracked and unstable, posing a trip hazard and lacking any visual appeal.

Before and After
- Before: The existing driveway and side paths were in a poor state, made up of tired, uneven concrete slabs with visible weeds and cracks throughout. The old surfaces had deteriorated significantly over time, creating an untidy and unsafe entrance to the property. Edging was inconsistent, and drainage was ineffective, leading to water pooling in certain areas and making the space look neglected.
- After: The transformation is striking. The entire area is now surfaced with a smooth, freshly laid layer of tarmac, providing a clean, durable, and low-maintenance finish. The new surfaces are even, weather-resistant, and designed for effective drainage—vastly improving both the aesthetics and functionality of the exterior.
Project Steps
- Initial Assessment & Planning
- Reviewed the condition of the existing driveway and footpaths.
- Discussed the client’s requirement and agreed on layout, levels, and finishes.
- Ground Excavation
- Lifted and disposed of old concrete slabs and loose pathway sections.
- Cleared the entire area of weeds, rubble, and debris.
- Excavated the full area to the required depth to accommodate new base layers.
- Ensured proper gradient for water drainage away from the property.
- Installation of Sub-Base
- Supplied and laid MOT Type 1 hardcore across all surfaces.
- Machine-compacted in layers to create a solid and level foundation.
- Membrane & Sand Bedding
- Rolled out weed control membrane sheeting across the full footprint.
- Laid grit sand where edging kerbs or new borders were needed.
- Edging & Kerbs
- Repaired or replaced edging stones to define the boundary of the driveway and paths.
- Ensured kerbs were aligned and levelled to contain the new surface cleanly.
- Tarmac Installation
- Applied hot rolled tarmac evenly across the driveway and pathway areas.
- Raked, levelled, and machine-rolled to achieve a smooth, durable finish.
- Final Detailing & Cleanup
- Checked for consistent levels and smooth transitions between driveway and footpaths.
- Cleaned up all excess materials and left the site neat and tidy.
Client Feedback
The homeowners loved their new space, it was exactly what they wanted, a brand new modern and functional driveway.
Conclusion
The final finish not only greatly improves the kerb appeal of the property but also provides a low maintenance and practical surface that will last for years to come. The smooth new tarmac paths around the perimeter of the house allow for safe, easy access while tying in seamlessly with the freshly surface drive.
