- Before: The previous driveway was deteriorating, with visable cracks, patchy surfaces, and uneven ground levels. Poor water runoff had left areas prone to puddling, while the worn finish no longer complemented the property’s traditional stone facade. The homeowner wanted a more refined look with added character and a stronger foundation.
- After: The completed driveway now offers a fresh, polished appearance with a smooth tarmac surface that blends beautifully with the home’s exterior. Project Steps
- Site Clearance & Preparation
- We began by breaking out and removing the existing tarmac surface, which had cracked and deteriorated over time. All debris was cleared from the site to create a clean workspace, ensuring the area was ready for excavation.
- Excavation & Groundworks
- The entire driveway area was excavated to the required depth, making sure we allowed space for the new sub-base, edging, and tarmac layers. Care was taken around utility access covers and drainage points to preserve functionality.
- Sub-Base Installation
- A solid foundation was built using Type 1 MOT hardcore, which was carefully spread across the area and compacted in layers using a vibrating plate compactor. This forms a strong, load-bearing base essential for the longevity of the surface. To improve ground stability and help prevent weed growth, a heavy-duty geotextile membrane was laid across the sub-base. This layer separates the subgrade from the hardcore and aids in drainage performance.
- Edging & Feature Installation – Belgian Blocks
- Belgian block setts were then bedded in a strong concrete mix and laid around the full perimeter of the driveway. These not only enhance the aesthetic but also act as a firm, long-lasting retaining edge to contain the tarmac. At the centre of the driveway, a decorative circular feature was constructed using the same blocks. This design element added a visual focal point and helped break up the expanse of tarmac for a more bespoke finish.
- Base Coat & Tarmac Application
- A layer of 10mm porous binder-course tarmac was applied throughout the driveway area. This mix offers excellent water drainage and is ideal for residential driveways where surface water control is a priority.
- Consolidation & Finishing
- The tarmac was rolled and compacted to a consistent depth of 2 inches using a heavy roller, ensuring a smooth and even finish. Once consolidated, the edges were cleaned, the site was tidied, and any loose materials were removed to leave a professional, clean result.
