This was a large-scale driveway replacement project for a modern detached property in Whalley. The original tarmac driveway was functional but didn’t really match the quality of the home and didn’t maximise the available space, so the homeowners wanted a change. The goal was to create a huge, high-quality block paved area that would provide ample parking for multiple vehicles and significantly enhance the property.

Before and After
- Before: The property had a standard tarmac driveway that, while practical, was plain and starting to show its age. It didn’t fully utilise the large frontage of the property, leaving unused space to the side.
- After: The entire frontage has been transformed into a spectacular and expansive block-paved driveway. The warm, classic brindle paving creates a welcoming and impressive approach to the house, providing a vast, clean, and durable surface with a premium feel.
Project Steps
A complete transformation was required to achieve the client’s vision. Our process included:
- Tarmac Removal & Excavation: The project began with the complete excavation of the existing driveway. We broke up and removed the entire tarmac surface, along with the old sub-base, to prepare for a much larger and more robust construction.
- Sub-base Installation: A new, deep, and heavy-duty sub-base of MOT Type 1 hardcore was installed across the entire expanded area. This was meticulously levelled and compacted with a heavy-duty roller to create an incredibly solid foundation, essential for a large area designed to handle multiple vehicles.
- Drainage System: To manage surface water effectively across such a large space, we installed a new, high-capacity channel drain system along the front edge of the driveway, ensuring all rainfall is captured and diverted correctly.
- Block Paving & Edging: The main body of the driveway was laid with high-quality brindle block pavers in a strong, interlocking 45-degree herringbone pattern. The entire area was then framed with a crisp, contrasting charcoal block paver border to create a sharp and defined edge.
- Finishing Touches: A new, matching block-paved doorstep was created for a seamless transition into the home. Once all paving was complete, the joints were filled with kiln-dried sand, and the entire surface was compacted one final time to lock everything in place.
Conclusion
The result is a stunning, expansive driveway that dramatically improves the home’s kerb appeal and practicality. The sheer scale of the new paved area provides a luxurious feel and offers an incredible amount of clean, off-road parking. The classic combination of brindle and charcoal paving perfectly complements the red brick of the house, creating a timeless and impressive finish.
