Before and After
Before: The original area consisted of a narrow, worn pathway and an uneven gravel and garden space with poor structure and limited usable parking. The sloped layout and lack of defined edges made the area difficult to maintain and prevented it from being used effectively as a driveway.
After: The completed project features a wide, smooth tarmac driveway framed with charcoal block paving borders. Newly built retaining walls create a clear structure around the driveway while also forming raised planting areas and a central set of stone steps leading up to the garden. The result is a much more organised, accessible and visually appealing outdoor space.
How the Transformation Happened
Site Clearance and Ground Preparation
We began by clearing the existing paving, gravel and garden debris from the area. The ground was excavated to the required depth to allow for proper foundations and to reshape the space for the new driveway layout.
Installing Retaining Walls
New retaining walls were constructed using stone to support the raised garden areas and define the driveway perimeter. These walls not only stabilise the surrounding ground but also create a structured boundary that frames the driveway and pathways.
Sub Base Installation
A strong MOT Type 1 sub base was installed and compacted to provide a solid and stable foundation for the new driveway. Proper groundwork is essential to ensure the surface remains level and durable over time.
Block Paved Edging
Charcoal block paving was installed along the edges of the driveway to create a clean border and help contain the tarmac surface. This edging adds visual contrast and gives the driveway a more finished and defined appearance.
Tarmac Surfacing
Once the base and edging were prepared, the driveway was surfaced with high quality tarmac and compacted to create a smooth, even finish suitable for daily vehicle use.
Steps and Finishing Details
Stone steps were installed within the retaining walls to provide easy access between the driveway and the upper garden level. The final result blends practical access with a tidy and well structured landscape.
