raj green indian sandstone patio accrington 10

Project Overview

Meadow Drives recently completed this substantial garden transformation for a homeowner in Accrington. The project included removing an ageing concrete patio, installing a new Raj Green Indian sandstone patio and pathway, constructing a paved step, adding timber sleeper planting areas, and carrying out tree removal and pruning.

The result is a more attractive and practical garden that retains its established lawn and traditional stone features while introducing new spaces for outdoor seating, planting and movement around the property.

Before and After

Before

The garden featured ageing pathways, tired access steps and limited patio space. The existing layout felt disconnected and did not make the most of the property’s attractive garden setting. Access between different levels was less inviting, and the overall appearance lacked the character and elegance of natural stone.

After

The garden has been completely transformed with a beautifully laid Indian Sandstone patio and pathway system. New retaining walls and steps provide improved access throughout the garden, while the warm natural stone colours create a premium finish that perfectly complements the property. The larger patio area now provides an ideal space for relaxing and entertaining, whilst the new pathway creates an impressive entrance to the home.

Removing the Old Concrete Patio

The existing concrete patio beside the house was worn, dated and no longer complemented the garden. Our team broke up and removed the old surface before excavating and preparing the area for the new paving.

Suitable foundations were installed and compacted to create a stable base for the patio and pathways. The levels were carefully planned to connect the house, lawn and different parts of the garden while allowing surface water to drain correctly.

Raj Green Indian Sandstone Patio

A spacious new patio was installed directly outside the property using Raj Green Indian sandstone. This natural paving contains an attractive mixture of green, brown, grey and warm earthy tones, giving every slab its own individual colouring and character.

The mixed-size paving pattern creates a traditional finish that suits the property and surrounding garden. The patio now provides a generous area for garden furniture, entertaining and relaxing outdoors, with convenient access from the rear doors.

Sandstone Pathway Around the Lawn

The existing central lawn was retained and framed with a new Indian sandstone pathway. This creates a practical route around the garden without taking away too much of the established grass.

The pathway connects the main patio with the raised section of the garden and provides clean, dependable access during wetter weather. Using matching Raj Green sandstone throughout helps the different areas feel like one coordinated design.

New Paved Step and Retained Stonework

A new paved step was constructed through the existing stone retaining wall, providing a safer and more convenient transition between the lower patio and raised lawn.

The original stone wall was preserved wherever possible, maintaining the garden’s established character. The sandstone paving works especially well alongside this traditional masonry and creates a natural transition between the old and new materials.

Timber Sleeper Planters

Treated timber sleepers were installed along the sides and rear of the garden to form defined planters and flower beds. These introduce warmth and structure while separating the paving and lawn from the planting areas.

The sleeper edging will allow the homeowners to add flowers, shrubs and other plants without them spreading onto the pathway. It also creates a neat border along the fencing and around the different levels of the garden.

Tree Removal and Pruning

Selected trees were removed where necessary, while the remaining trees and overgrown growth were carefully pruned. This opened up the garden, increased the available light and created more space around the lawn, pathways and planting areas.

Established greenery was retained where suitable, allowing the completed garden to feel mature and natural rather than completely stripped back.

The Completed Garden

The finished garden now has a spacious Raj Green sandstone patio, a matching pathway surrounding the lawn, clearly defined planting areas and improved access between its different levels.

The combination of natural stone, timber sleepers, established grass and retained stonework gives the garden a balanced and timeless appearance. It is now a much more practical outdoor space while still preserving the original character that made the garden appealing.
