Project Overview
Meadow Drives recently completed this extensive Indian sandstone patio and garden transformation for a homeowner in Accrington. The project replaced a large section of lawn and several tired garden areas with attractive natural stone paving, creating considerably more usable outdoor space.
The completed design combines a spacious multi-toned sandstone patio with artificial grass, retained planting areas and existing raised decking. The result is a practical garden with several areas for seating, entertaining and everyday family use.

Before
The garden was dominated by an extensive natural lawn with older paving, sheds, a greenhouse and several disconnected areas. Although it offered plenty of space, the layout was difficult to maintain and did not provide a sufficiently large or coordinated area for seating and entertaining.
After
The garden has been completely reorganised with a large multi-toned Indian sandstone patio extending around a neat artificial lawn. Retained planting and decking soften the design, while new fencing and clearly defined areas create a smart, spacious and practical outdoor environment.
Preparing the Garden
Before work began, much of the garden consisted of natural grass surrounded by older paving, a timber shed, a greenhouse and several uneven or underused areas.
The garden was cleared and excavated to create the space required for the new layout. Unwanted structures, vegetation and unsuitable materials were removed before the ground was levelled and prepared.
A strong, compacted sub-base was installed beneath the paving to provide suitable support for the large patio. The levels and falls were carefully formed to encourage surface water to drain away correctly.
Installing the Indian Sandstone Patio
A large new patio was installed using multi-toned Indian sandstone. The paving features an attractive mixture of warm brown, buff, grey and reddish shades, giving the completed surface plenty of natural variation.
Different slab sizes were laid in a traditional random pattern, helping the patio feel less uniform and allowing the natural characteristics of the stone to stand out.
The paving extends across the rear section of the garden and continues around the central lawn. This creates convenient access between the house, seating areas, raised decking, storage space and the different parts of the garden.
Artificial Grass and Retained Features
The central lawn was replaced with artificial grass, providing a bright, tidy and low-maintenance area throughout the year. It creates an effective contrast against the earthy colours of the Indian sandstone.
The existing central flower bed was incorporated into the new design, allowing established plants and decorative features to remain part of the garden. The raised timber decking beside the house was also retained and connected to the new paving and lawn.
New timber fencing provides a smart backdrop around the perimeter while improving the garden’s privacy and overall appearance.
The Finished Garden
The completed transformation has made much better use of this large outdoor space. The Indian sandstone provides generous room for garden furniture, outdoor dining, storage and entertaining, while the artificial lawn prevents the garden from feeling overly paved.
Natural variations within the sandstone become especially noticeable when the surface is wet, revealing the rich colours and textures contained within each slab.
The finished garden is attractive, practical and easier to maintain, with clearly defined areas that work together as one coordinated design.
