Project Overview
We have recently completed a garden patio installation project in Darwen, whereby we converted a lawn into a modern patio using Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone.
The objective of this project was to create a spacious patio area immediately outside the house and a further pathway along the side of the house.

Before and After
Before:
The Before
Before work began, the garden consisted mainly of turf with no defined seating or patio area:
- No dedicated space for outdoor furniture or entertaining
- Uneven ground and limited structure
- Poor transition from the house into the garden
- Old, unused paving slabs that needed removing
The space had potential but lacked functionality and visual appeal.
After:
The completed project has completely enhanced the garden:
- Large, modern patio area ideal for seating and entertaining
- Clean, contemporary finish with natural stone texture
- Improved access with a matching side pathway
- Low-maintenance and weather-resistant surface
The new layout makes far better use of the space and creates a seamless connection between the home and garden.
Our Process
1. Excavation & Ground Preparation
We started by digging out the designated patio and pathway areas, removing turf and soil to the correct depth. Any old slabs were lifted and cleared from site.
2. Sub-Base Installation
A strong MOT Type 1 sub-base was installed and mechanically compacted to form a solid foundation, ensuring the patio remains stable for years to come.
3. Setting Levels & Drainage
We carefully set the levels and introduced a slight fall away from the property to allow for effective water runoff and prevent pooling.
4. Laying the Sandstone
The Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone was laid in a mixed-size pattern, creating a clean, modern look. The consistent grey tones work perfectly with the brickwork of the property.
5. Pathway Installation
A matching sandstone pathway was installed along the side of the house, improving access and tying the whole design together.
6. Jointing & Finishing
The patio was finished using a durable jointing compound, providing a neat, long-lasting and weed-resistant finish.
